Parisian roaster since 1880
Paris now boasts many addresses dedicated to specialty coffee. Among them, one establishment stands out: Verlet, located at 256 rue Saint-Honoré since 1880. A pioneer of single-origin coffees in France, it is the oldest Parisian house to perpetuate artisanal roasting. Here's what it offers, and why it's unlike any other address in the capital.
An active roastery in the heart of Paris for 145 years
Most Parisian roasters have set up shop in the last ten or twenty years, driven by the specialty coffee wave. Verlet has existed since 1880. This is not a difference in degree; it's a difference in nature.
Our roastery is located on rue de Montpensier, behind the Palais Royal garden, a few hundred meters from the shop. It has never left its original location. Every day, the beans are hand-roasted there according to the French "Robe de Moine" tradition: a slow, controlled roast, guided by the roaster's eye and nose. The aroma of freshly roasted coffee naturally spreads throughout the neighborhood. Those who have recognized it once never forget it.
It is this continuity, this maintenance of the craft in the same place for 145 years, that makes Verlet an unrivaled address in Paris.
Over thirty single-origin coffees
Verlet is a pioneer of single-origin coffees in France. It was Pierre Verlet who, in the 1960s, was the first to offer single-origin coffee tastings in Paris, at a time when coffee was exclusively sold as anonymous blends.
Today, our selection includes over thirty origins: Ethiopian coffees with floral and fruity aromas, Central American origins with balanced and chocolatey notes, and Asian crus with earthier and more complex profiles.
Alongside the single-origins, our historic blends like Grand Pavois and Haute Mer, created by Auguste Verlet in the 1920s, remain two of the house's most emblematic coffees.
Rare harvests found nowhere else
Among the Parisian addresses dedicated to specialty coffee, few offer origins as confidential as those in our selection of rare and seasonal harvests.
Jamaican Blue Mountain, 90% of which goes to Japan every year. Saint Helena Napoleon, grown on a remote island in the South Atlantic, available only a few weeks a year. Bourbon Pointu, an ancient variety with extremely low yields, boasting rare citrus and floral notes.
These coffees exist because Verlet has maintained direct relationships with producers for decades. This proximity provides access to batches that traditional distribution cannot reach.
The tasting room at 256 rue Saint-Honoré
Verlet is not just a shop where you buy coffee. It is also a tasting room where you can sit down, order a coffee or tea, and take your time.
The decor, in the spirit of the 1920s, has not sought to modernize to please passing customers. Regulars have been meeting there for generations. Visitors discovering it for the first time immediately understand why this address has endured for 145 years without changing its nature.
The coffee is prepared with the same beans as those sold in the shop. The pastries are by Carl Marletti, a renowned Parisian pastry chef whose house shares with Verlet the same taste for precision and quality ingredients.
Teas and fine groceries
Verlet is not just a coffee house. Since the late 19th century, the house has also imported teas selected garden by garden: China, Japan, India, Sri Lanka. Over forty crus, from single-origin teas to flavored teas, from spring first flushes to winter roasts.
The fine grocery completes the selection: candied fruits from Lilamand of Saint-Rémy, rare honeys, artisanal jams, chocolates, biscuits. Products chosen for their quality and their natural pairings with the house's coffees and teas.
